سُمِّي هذا التفسير بـ " الجلالين " نسبة إلى مؤلِّفيه الجليلين: جلال الدين المحلَّى، وجلال الدين السيوطي ؛ وقد ألف القسم الأول منه السيوطي حتى وصل إلى الجزء العاشر من
القرآن الكريم أي إلى سورة التوبة، ثم جاء المحلي وأتم هذا التفسير، وهو من التفاسير القيِّمة المفيدة، التي لاقت انتشاراً واسعاً بين المسلمين، وعمَّ النفع به ديار المسلمين
كافة، لما امتاز به من عبارة وجيزة، وأسلوب واضح بيِّن، ليس فيه تعقيد ولا غموض.
وخبر هذا التفسير يفيد أن الإمام جلال الدين المحلَّي - - كان من العلماء المبرَّزين في القرن التاسع الهجري، بدأ بتأليف هذا التفسير من سورة الكهف وانتهى به إلى سورة الناس،
وعندما شرع في تفسير سورة الفاتحة وما بعدها وافته المنيَّة قبل أن يُتمَّ كتابة تفسير النصف الأول من القرآن؛ ثم جاء الإمام السيوطي بعده - وهو من علماء القرن العاشر الهجري -
فقطع العهد على نفسه بإتمام تفسير ما لم يتمكن الإمام المحلَّى من تفسيره؛ فشرع في تفسير سورة البقرة، وأتم التفسير إلى نهاية سورة الإسراء. وبعمل هذين الإمامين اكتمل هذا
