The Interpretation of Dreams (German: Die Traumdeutung) is an 1899 book by the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, in which the author introduces his theory of the unconscious with
respect to dream interpretation, and discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex.
The theory states that dreams don't actually mean anything. According to Freud, dreams are imagery of a wish or impulse from childhood that has since been repressed. This is why
Freud studied dreams to understand the unconscious mind. Therefore, according to Freud, your dreams reveal your repressed wishes to you.
